WHAT IS THE BEST OPTION TO PREVENT INTERNET MISUSE?

Doing research on this topic for the class presentation I realized how costly it is for companies to deal with internet misuse in the workplace. I was shocked, I never thought it could be that expensive.
Business’ are spending thousands of dollars trying to protect their computer system and also trying to prevent internet misuse.
In my opinion the best way to prevent this problem is to block all website that might divert the concentration of the employees. Enforcing policies and internet monitoring are not enough to resolve this issue. I think that if the companies do not block the websites, employees are going to keep on using those websites no matter what.
Do you think employees will continue to use internet at work to surf web sites such as Facebook even though they know they are not allowed at your work place?

  1. Yes most of them will continue surfing websites such as Facebook, twitter....etc.
your solution is a an efficient solution but some people still can go around it with different programs to access these websites.
I think an effective solution is to minimize the access of the Internet to certain employees of the business who need the Internet to do business, while also blocking websites and monotoning these computers usage.

  2. I dont think that there is really a solution to stop people surfing n the websites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter because the use of internet is a must now in a job most companies talk to their suppliers and their customers through emails and its very hard to to check what every employee is doing at all times its hard to monitor them, but once you fire someone for doing that a lot of people will slow or stop surfing as much!!

  3. Controlling employee behavior is a difficult task, and most likely almost impossible. Yet, a good manager must have the skills to at least influence employee behaviors. Some of which include the ability to motivate them through rewards or recognition. When a problematic behavior occurs, such as the misuse of the firm's resources, like the internet, which causes low productivity and effectiveness, a manager must enforce actions that manifest such behaviors. Of course, ignoring a behavioral problem is no solution. Through effective communication, stating the problem and action, not the person, is a good method for improvement. Encouraging employee interaction and stating their value to the company is another manager skill that will influence improvement. I believe, many manager skills and tasks, all together, can create the ultimate solution.

  4. How expensive is it to larger companies? I do not understand why companies wont restrict social sites in general. If they want to use Facebook to advertise than they should just hire a team to operate and manage facebook since it is a powerful online marketing tool. However, just restrict everyone else from using it because there is really no good that comes from it in a workplace...

  5. I agree with Omar! Restrict the social sites and other sites as well. If the job requires interaction with suppliers and customers, the intranet/extranet is sufficient. The company should set the tone, not the employees. If you come into a company where the culture is "no internet use", you won't come to expect it. Imagine the types of debating situations that occur at company meetings where internet usage is allowed. The employees and management would spend time arguing about internet usage rather than something relevant like "work"! I dislike saying it, but employees are like children. You let them do something and they will not only expect it but want to add additional options on top of the privilege.

  6. I think every company should have Internet usage policy. Company should make it clear that employees have no expectation of privacy when it comes to using employer equipment and can be monitored at any time and without notice. A good policy should make it clear exactly what’s acceptable – and what isn’t – when it comes to computer use. But in order to be effective, the policy must be applied to all levels of the organization, and it must be enforced.

  7. I think Elena's suggestion is a good one. The key issue is as she stated is that the policy must be applied and enforced. There are many companies that already have these policies, but fail miserably when it comes to enforcing the rules of the policy and making employees suffer the consequences of their actions.

  8. The best way as Omar said hire a company to do advertise for your business and just lock access to any social networking on work place for employee. Even if employee will sing a agreement to not use internet for personal usage, there is a lease one employee will still keep doing this anyway.
